Union County is one of Ohio’s fastest-growing communities—and with that growth comes increased responsibility. On the latest episode of The Good Stuff Podcast, we sit down with Kara Brown, the Superintendent of the Union County Board of Developmental Disabilities, for a heartfelt and informative discussion about the upcoming renewal levy on the ballot this Tuesday.

This isn’t just about funding. It’s about community. Inclusion. Dignity. And doing what’s right for our neighbors.

🗳️ What’s This Levy About?

Let’s be clear: This is a renewal levy—not a new tax.

Since 2002, this funding has supported essential services for individuals with developmental disabilities in Union County. While the cost to residents has stayed the same, demand has doubled. The Board now serves over twice as many individuals as it did just two decades ago, yet continues to stretch the same dollars further every year.

Kara explains: “We’re essentially operating on 2002 numbers in a 2025 world. Prices have gone up, expectations have grown, and needs have increased—but our funding hasn’t.”

💡 What Does the Board of DD Actually Do?

Think specialized care, community programs, case management, equipment lending libraries, inclusive events like sensory-friendly nights at Uptown, and helping families navigate the often overwhelming world of disability support. From wheelchairs to workforce inclusion, the Board serves families at every stage of life.

But what might be most powerful? They build connection. They walk alongside people. They show up when life is hard and provide the kind of human care that government funding rarely covers—but our neighbors absolutely need.

🌱 Growing County, Growing Needs

With Union County’s population booming, the need for services is expanding. And as Kara pointed out, these aren’t just numbers. These are people—friends, coworkers, classmates, and neighbors—who deserve a place in our community.

“This isn’t just about services. It’s about being part of something bigger. It’s about building a community where everyone belongs,” Kara says.

💬 Final Thoughts

This conversation with Kara wasn’t just about budget lines or bureaucracy—it was a reminder that behind every levy, every vote, and every program, there’s a person. A family.

A life changed because a community showed up.

Let’s keep showing up. Let’s keep building the good stuff.

📅 Vote YES on the Union County Board of Developmental Disabilities Levy this Tuesday.
