From Ice Cream Memories to Philanthropic Futures: A Conversation with Matt Milholland

What do childhood memories, a vision for local impact, and a beautifully quirky historic building on West Fourth Street have in common?

They’re all part of the inspiring conversation I had with financial advisor and community leader Matt Milholland on the latest episode of The Good Stuff Podcast.

Matt, a partner at Milholland and Mitchell Financial Group and vice chair of the Union County Foundation, joined me to talk about life in Marysville, how we can maintain our small-town spirit amidst growth, and why the foundation he helps lead is quietly becoming one of the most important forces shaping our future.

Rooted in Community, Focused on the Future

Matt and I go way back—to YMCA basketball games and the days when Mill Valley was just 20 homes on Cinnamon Drive. That foundation (pun intended) is what makes these conversations special. We’re not just talking about Marysville. We’re part of it.

But this episode wasn’t just a trip down memory lane.

It was also a look at the powerful work being done by the Union County Foundation—an organization dedicated to matching charitable giving with community needs, both big and small. From $2,000 grants to help fund local arts programs, to a $20 million asset base stewarded for future impact, the Foundation is quietly driving positive change in every corner of our county.

A New Hub for Giving: The Union County Philanthropy Center

One of the most exciting developments Matt shared was the purchase and renovation of a historic home on West Fourth Street. This soon-to-be Philanthropy Center will bring together nonprofits like United Way and Care Train under one roof, making it easier to collaborate, share resources, and serve our community more effectively.

It's more than just an office. It’s a space where generosity lives.

Whether you’re a contractor who can lend a few hours on a Saturday, a business owner looking to give back, or someone who just wants to be part of something bigger—there’s a place for you here.

It’s Not Just About Dollars

Yes, donations help. But so do churros handed over with a smile. So do conversations in the coffee line. So do community-driven podcasts like this one. We talked about the value of intentionality—of making the effort to connect with people, support local businesses, and be part of the solution.

Matt said it best: “If you're the smartest person in the room, you're in the wrong room.” The same could be said for engagement. If you're waiting for someone else to shape your community, you're missing your chance to do it yourself.

What Kind of Community Do We Want?

As Marysville grows, we’re at a crossroads. Will we lose the charm that brought us here? Or will we take the best of who we’ve been and carry it forward—together?

This episode is a reminder that the answer is up to us.

Whether you’re a native like Matt and me or just moved here last year, your voice, your presence, and your passion matter.
